Brand New Shows for Fall 2015 part 1

While all-time favorites are keeping their ratings up-- some already starting to say goodbye as their final season kicks off-- there is a new slew of shows that have already premiered.

1. Heroes Reborn

This much-anticipated reboot of the old Heroes franchise did not disappoint. Over the summer, a series of short episodes came out online, entitled Dark Matters. The first episode takes off from that but presents things mostly from the point-of-view of Noah Bennet, a.k.a. The Man with the Horn-rimmed Glasses. He's the only major character from the old series that has appeared so far. They are keeping things mysterious with Noah, so that kept my interest piqued.

Also appearing in the first episode is Zachary Levi. Chuck fans will get a tad disoriented with his character here. We all loved him as Chuck, right? He was adorkable. Here, he is the total opposite, and I am not quite sure how to take it. I think he needs to convince me more that his Heroes Reborn character is bitter enough to turn evil. I need to see more anger, Zach!

The new Evos (evolved humans, humans with powers) were interesting too. I especially liked Katana Girl. She is so kick-ass. The Vortex Boy (?) played an evil Peter Pan in Once Upon a Time, so I was a bit unnerved to see him vulnerable and bullied. You see, as The Pan, he had this smirk and a sneer that you could almost see in this new character; the these two characters are (again) exact opposites of each other.

In any case, I will be watching more Heroes Reborn.

2. Limitless

Taking off from the 2011 Bradley Cooper starrer of the same title, Limitless proved interesting -- at least the first episode was. I liked the pace and the character development. I just hope it does not just follow the normal-cop-paired-with-special-person formula I have been seeing a lot of lately-- hello, Almost Human, and Intelligence -- get my drift? Yeah, these shows got axed already after one season. There is another new one, Minority Report (more on this later). But then there is Cracked which is on its second season already, but then Perception got cancelled after three. So I guess there is hope yet. Going back to Limitless, I hope the show-runners will take care of this one. I was sore after they cancelled Almost Human.

3. Blindspot

Yep that's Lady Sif all inked up. Jamie Alexander's character here is another kick-ass woman. I've never been really crazy about her, actually, ever since I saw her in Kyle XY. Her upper lip is much too stiff-- and I mean that in the literal way. Her eyes are very expressive though. The premise of Blindspot got me interested to see more.

4. Minority Report

To be honest, though this first episode is well-made and the pacing is exciting, I found the premise too forced. I saw the film it was based on and I actually liked it. But the film version of Minority Report ended the story of the three special kids. I hope the series can put more substance into the premise. I'm willing to give this series a try but it won't be at the top of my must-watch list.

Let me end this here, for now. Part 2 will feature Scream Queens, Rosewood, and The Muppets.

Heneral Luna

Before anything, let me just say that I'm not a huge fan of Tagalog films -- lalo na yung over-commercialized overly dramatic sigawan-sampalan-fests with copied or predictable plots.

That said, I highly recommend this movie. This one, I actually liked.  Here is my review and I will do my best not to spoil it.

I loved the symbolisms. You have to see it to get what I mean. Otherwise, I will be spoiling it.

I loved the touch of Filipino humor in it. I'd heard other people not liking that, but I found it made the movie reachable and better understood. My favorite scene was when he tried to talk to the American.

I think teachers should tell their students to watch it. I think every Filipino should watch it. Take note: students get a 50% discount, even Masteral students. Just bring your ID.

It asks you pointed questions and makes you feel insecure about your own nationalism. All of a sudden, you're thinking if you love your country enough.

It makes you appreciate how people in your life can be level-headed and reasonable, especially when others are being petty and selfish.

Watching the movie, my only complaint would be on the obvious budgetary restrictions. They tried to make it all seem realistic, but you could see where they had to cut corners.

But even with those, I still give this movie ***** -- yes, 5 stars. So watch it already.

ADDENDUM:
Here are some tidbits about Antonio Luna that shows how kick-ass he was. Some of it were in the movie: http://www.filipiknow.net/facts-about-antonio-luna/

A drastic hair change

Along 9th Street in Cubao is a place called The Beauty Cafe.

When you walk in, it looks like a cozy little nook with tables and chairs, a sofa with throw pillows and a wall with waterfalls. The food is great and the grilled ensaymada is pure delight (especially when paired with hot cocoa, I'm told). The people are friendly too.

For many people it's just another food place, a good alternative to the coffee shops that tend to be crowded and noisy.

But that's not all.

To me, it now holds the distinction of being the place where I had my most drastic transformation just yet. That's where the "beauty" part of the place's name comes in.

The place is owned and operated by Tony Galvez.
Yes, this Tony Galvez,
(Picture from https://pbs.twimg.com/)

You see, I'm not the best judge of hair styles for myself. Case in point:
This was me in May 2015 -- with my long hair which I usually tied in a ponytail. Boring, right?

Every few years, after letting my hair grow, I get it cut really short, and donate the hair to charity -- to be made into wigs for people whose sickness tend to leave them bald. I've done it three times already, and it feels good to know that my hair is giving confidence to a little girl with cancer.  This year, I found an ad on FB announcing that donations for alopecia (bald spots) victims need hair that's at least 8 inches long (While the ones for cancer victims is a minimum of 10 inches). I need to look for that ad again though... (If you know about a local group that accepts 8-inch hair donations, please let me know).

Anyway, my bestfriend, Penny Tan, recently had her hair done by no other than Tony Galvez at-- you guessed it-- The Beauty Cafe. She has naturally wavy hair and she has them treated every now and then. She raved about this place so I thought it was time to make a person with alopecia happy.

When I got to the cafe, Tony himself approached us and asked me what I wanted to do with my hair. I told him I'd like to donate it so I'd like my hair cut very short. He approved of it and added that I needed hair color as well.

COLOR?!? -- my mind screamed. My hair is what stylists would call "virgin" -- untouched by coloring and perming chemicals.

Tony ushered me to the back room - a fully-furnished salon. In the middle was this salon chair facing three fully-lit fullbody mirrors. He put me on one of the chairs on the side first while he gave his assistants instructions. I distinctly remember him saying "sculpting" and "colorize" several times.  I asked him what color he had in mind for me but all he said was that they will match it with my skin tone.

Hokayyy...

Tony tied my hair with a rubber band and made the first cut, and suddenly my head felt much lighter.

He explained that it's easier to wash shorter hair and then ushered me off to have my hair washed. Then he made me sit in that throne-like chair I described earlier (the one with three huge mirrors). His assistant rolled a 3-layered tool stand close to us and proceeded to wrap me up for the rest of the cutting.

While Tony was in the zone snipping away on my tresses, I couldn't help but smile. He was very particular about which tools to use. That, to me, is a true sign of an artist. If you want the best work to be done, you better use the right tools. If you are to make a living out of it, you better invest on the good ones. I got that from my dad, and I am passing it on to my daughter.

At one point, his assistant asked him if she could plug "it". I thought it was the blower. Boy, was I wrong! It was the shaver! The last time my scalp felt a shaver was when I was shaved bald as a toddler -- based on the belief that if you shave a baby's head, the hair will grow thicker. While the thing was whirring behind me, I could swear I had this fearful look on my face, and my mind was repeating the words, "Please do not shave higher. Please do not shave higher. Oh please do not shave higher!"  Suffice it to say, I now have shorter hair than many guys I know.

His assistant then asked him if she could prepare the color. To this Tony replied firmly, "No, I will mix it myself."  Then he disappeared to the back. While he was there, his assistant brushed off the cut hair while explaining that Tony likes to mix his own colors. I was impressed -- that would assure return clients, as long as they're happy, and they usually are with him.

Tony came out with a bowl of white glop. With my limited experience in hair color, I knew that this would mean that my hair would be colored lighter than my natural one. In fact, the glop looked like the bleaching solution used recently on my daughter's hair. It made me nervous.

Am I ready for this drastic a change?  What if I were being prepped to be blonde? OH Lord in heaven, please let it not be blonde!

When I was searching for hair color for my daughter, the packages all said the solution must be left on the hair for 20-30 minutes. While waiting for the color to set in, I would sometimes try to see through the glop. At 10 minutes in, I could see my hair was turning brown.  I didn't know how long they were going to leave the solution on my hair so I tried my best to relax. I mean, what can I do by then, right?  I might as well accept that I was going to have light hair.

Thankfully, after 15 minutes, Tony came in and said, "That's ok now," and I was ushered back to the shampoo station.  Let me rave here about that shampoo station -- the chair has controls to lift the seat and pull back the back rest! It was so cool!

Anyway, the chemicals were making my scalp itch already so the shampoo treatment was welcomed. It took a lot of self-control on my part not to take a peek at the color of my hair while it was being shampooed. Then my hair was brusquely towel-dried. I say brusquely because there wasn't anything anymore that made the towel drag that it was literally flying all over my head.

When the assistant took the towel off ,my head, my hair was almost dry and it was light brown -- like the hair you find on corn.

Now, I can't help but touch my hair, just to make sure I still have some on my head -- it's that light. I touch the back more often though. I guess I am not used to having a shaven nape, and not being able to pull the hair at the back of my head is unnerving. But then again, that's all I need to do with my hair now -- touch it, muss it up and my hair is set for the day.

And all I can say is: THANK YOU TONY GALVEZ!!!

ADDENDUM:

I found the contact info of the Foundation for the hair donation!  I saw a Facebook ad for their event for August 29 (Saturday) -- a Mass hair cutting and concert:

Haley Joel Osment makes his big screen return in Sex Ed

PRESS RELEASE
SOLAR PICTURES

HALEY JOEL OSMENT MAKES HIS BIG SCREEN RETURN IN SEX ED
The boy who saw dead people is back, and this time he’s talking about the birds and the bees.

It’s been more than 15 years since Haley Joel Osment uttered that famous line as the haunted boy in “Sixth Sense” and after taking a break from the big screen, Osment is making a comeback-- and this time he is seeing a virgin on the mirror.

From being Forrest Gump Jr. to his break out role as Cole Sear, which made him the second youngest to be nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards, Osment seemed on his way to a long and successful acting career.

In addition to his follow-up movies Pay It Forward and A.I. (Artificial Intelligence), Osment made regular TV appearances and even did voice work for the hit Disney video game series Kingdom Hearts, but when he turned 18, Osment took a break from Hollywood and headed to New York.

"It was always college. My mum's a sixth-grade teacher, so it was never really negotiable. And luckily,
I wanted to go to college, too," he said in an interview.

Haley studied experimental theater and graduated from the NYU's Tisch School Of The Arts.

“You can only go to college at that time in your life once, when you are 18, in order to sort of figure out what you want in your life,” he adds.

Haley said having that college experience and a social life that didn't revolve around Hollywood was absolutely crucial for him.

While Haley has been working steadily since graduating in 2011, his biggest role upon his return was in Entourage where he played the main antagonist Travis McCredle, which for a lot of people shattered their childhood image of Haley.

Something he redeems in the upcoming romantic indie comedy movie SEX ED from Solar Pictures.

In Sex Ed, Haley plays Eddie Cole, a down on his luck teacher who lands his first teaching gig at an inner-city middle school.

He soon finds that his highly pubescent pupils are receiving no form of sexual education. And though he isn't really equipped to teach them, he's takes on the challenge of explaining “the birds and the bees”, much to the chagrin of their parents.

But his biggest problem isn’t the students or their parents—it’s himself.

How can a “virgin” teach Sex Ed?

It’s a fascinating role for Haley, as the former child star now finds himself the “teacher” to a new generation of kids who are also aspiring to be actors.
The movie is backed by a talented and comedic cast led by Matt Walsh (Veep) and Retta (Parks and Recreation), Lorenza Izzo (The Green Inferno, Hemlock Grove), Glen Powell (Expendables 3, The Dark Knight Rises), Laura Harring (Gossip Girl), Abby Elliott (Saturday Night Live), George Eads (CSI), and Lamorne Morris (The New Girl).

“Sex Ed”, uncut and in all its glory, will be hitting theaters on July 22, 2015, released through Solar Pictures.

Shows to watch

While many of us wait for the new seasons coming up in September and October, there are some pretty interesting ones that are already showing.

photo from http://www.coverwhiz.com/content/Hannibal-Season-1.jpg

We are currently seeing the final season of Hannibal. This show is twisted and unapologetically bloody. Yes, he's a cannibal, but he makes artworks out of the people he murders. He also loves to work to classical music (especially opera), and prepares his very special dishes gourmet style. He's a psychopath with a sense of style. (And who doesn't wanna have that library of his?)
(photo from http://media.tumblr.com/d7d016fd55758255d953bf2c77557f95/tumblr_inline_mnzt2n3eUU1qz4rgp.png)

AMC came out with Humans, a series about a time when androids were commonplace in households.
photo from http://loadtv.biz/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/855925.jpg

It features William Hurt (remember him from Children of a Lesser God?) and Colin Morgan (from Merlin). Interesting permise -- reminds me of Blade Runner, down to the feeling-androids thing. Personally, I think this is interesting enough to want to see more of it.

TNT has a new series that got writer Anne Rice raving. Proof deals with the search for proof of life after death through the eyes of a doctor who is torn between remaining skeptical and believing the stories they got.
photo from http://i.ytimg.com/vi/0DUMprlTqnI/hqdefault.jpg

It stars Jennifer Beals-- still hot at 51 years old. She is rocking it as a straight-talking surgeon who can boss them all. (Yeah, I have a thing for women with power.) Over all, I'm with Ms. Rice on this. I hope they keep up the momentum they have so far.

USA has Complications.
photo from http://en.seriesblog.tv/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2015/06/Complications-USA-Network.jpg

It is about a doctor who, in the first episode, goes way beyond the call of duty to save his patient. The first episode is riveting. I'm not a huge fan of suspense and thrillers, but this one has me hooked. I am not sure why I like it, but one thing is for sure -- it is unnerving to see Beth Riesgraf (from Leverage) doing heavy drama. I hope they don't veer away from his medical practice. I'll see if it keeps me hooked.

Playstation Plus  wasn't far behind... or maybe is a little bit ahead with Powers.
photo from http://www.123wallpapers.in/preview/3872/1883x1059/powers-tv-show-poster-Wallpaper.jpg

While this did come from a comic book series from Marvel, fans of Heroes will cry "rip off!" to this one. Mind you, more than dealing with people with powers, this one has no time travel (so far) and it focuses on a detective who had lost his powers. Let's just say that if Heroes happened in New York and Boston, this one should've happened in a lesser-known and smaller state. While it jumps into the bandwagon of humans-with-superpowers (hello Heroes, X-men, Mutant X, Avengers, etc.), it settles itself in a niche by providing a small-town feel in that genre (Smallville anyone?). So far, the characters are providing a rich mix of personalities and conflicts; thus giving this new series a potential to give the Heroes franchise a run for its money.

Playstation did well by coming out with this ahead of Heroes Reborn -- perhaps in an attempt to create a following. Still, the showrunners have a daunting task to do just that. So far, I think it's worth the watch.

So, these got my attention. We'll see what happens to them next.

Finding My Fins 4: Basking on my back

So ten days have gone and I can safely say now that I know how to swim -- not the elegant, competitive kind of swimming, but I can float and I can move in the water.

And that's two weeks from being afraid of the water and not even knowing if I could float.

And two weeks after starting from zero, I am now doing the backstroke. Before I started learning it, I thought it was going to be easy. Everyone made it look so easy and relaxing. When I tried it, it wasn't so.

The backstroke can be relaxing IF you know how to do it. In learning to do it, you have to remember several things:

1.  You'll float. Don't worry.
2.  Keep your chin up, otherwise, water will go to your face.
3.  Relax your strokes. If you don't, you'll create waves and splashes and make water go to your face.

4.  Water CAN go to your face, even enter your nose and/or mouth. It's ok. You can blow it out or spit it out.
5.  Do not forget to kick. It helps you float.
6.  Do not forget to breathe, it helps you float too.
7.  Relax your body.  You are naturally bouyant.

Survival swimming, check. Freestyle, check. Backstroke, check.

Do I continue? Ideally I should, but there is the problem of monies... yeah, if I were filthy rich!

Finding my fins part 3: Feeling the Freestyle

As my first week of swimming lessons end, I can say I am still learning the freestyle. I can do the moves but my timing is still off.  Off hand, you can say that this is easy:

(image from http://www.clubsatcrp.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/FREESTYLE.jpg)

And it does look easy. When the instructor gives you the breakdown, it sounds easy too. But for a tense old student like me, it's not easy.

I find myself being too conscious of my body being in the water, the sensation of not quite floating, and having my body under the water. It may sound silly, I know, but I still tense up feeling that I am not quite floating, which results in me not floating even more.

My instructor's solution was to tell me to twist some more when I pull up to get some air. That worked... if I remember to do it. A supplementary solution was to be reminded that I should move my right arm as I get air because the motion pushes me up, avoiding getting water into my mouth when I open it. That worked too... when I remembered to do it. The trick is to remember to do all those things in the right order.  In short, I need to be better at my timing.

With all those mishaps and pool-water-drinking, I was still able to freestyle my way to the middle of the pool (it's an olympic-sized pool). Personally, that's a feat!

So now, I spend my weekend resting muscles that had previously been forgotten. Then I'm back to the pool, it's waters and my lessons on Monday.

Finding my fins part 2: Bungling on bubbles

Day 2:

Teacher Hannah teaches only two of us. The other student is young man who looks like an adolescent. He's already doing the freestyle.

Me? I'm stuck on turning. It's when you do rudimentary swimming then you turn to float on your back and then turn down again to paddle some more. Sounds easy? It is not, not in the least bit. My problem is breathing properly. And breathing properly means relaxing in the water.

Yup, I am still tense in the water. I actually drank some of the pool water this time. I tend to do bubbling when I am not supposed to.

(photo from http://www.hdwallpapersn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Water-Bubbles-Wallpapers1.png)

From my point of view, bubbling was my go-to-action when I get tense. I get tense when my face is submerged.  The point is: I have got to relax.

I tried doing a back float on my own. at the safety of that corner of the pool near the stairs. I was able to do it for about a minute. So, it really is possible to relax in the water. Now, I just need to do that face down.

What did I learn this time? I have to unlearn some default actions:
1. I tend to look down, most of the time
2. my body is tense most of the time

And yeah, my body is still aching... well, aching more now. But I think these are good aches. It's nice to know I still have muscles to develop.

Finding My Fins Part 1: Getting Started

Yeah, I love mermaids. I wish I were one. It's ironic because I don't know how to swim. Then someone posted that they were looking for someone who could write about swimming lessons and posted a survey. I honestly ticked off "can't swim" and "never had lessons". No one had dared teach me before.

Apparently, the Bert Lozada Swim School can teach swimming at any age. Their Facebook page actually says so:

...but notice that the people there don't seem to be at my age. I'm turning 45 very soon. Dun dun dunn...

Yesterday was the first lesson.

In taking a swimming class, there are some things you have to do:
1. Tell your teacher you have asthma. Don't forget.
2. Be honest. If you are afraid of the water, say so. If you're tired, say so.
3. Have your gear. Those goggles actually helped me be a little bit less afraid of the water.
4. Try to have fun. It's difficult to learn swimming when you can't relax in the water.

So what did I learn in my first day?

I know now that I can actually float, especially when I relax. But then thinking of relaxing makes me tense up -- it's a vicious cycle. I am still working on that one.

I also know realize that I have muscles -- because they have this dull ache right now. I hope the aches go away soon. It's just my first day! And the lessons are daily for this week and next week. ...okay, I am tensing up again.  ugh!

Must learn to relax.  Must learn to relax.  Must learn to relax.

Here's to learning to relax -- in the water!

Using the Cherry Mobile Android One

I was up for a loyalty incentive from Sun Cellular and I decided to upgrade my plan and avail of their Android One promotion.

(image from http://www.semicurrent.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Smart-and-Sun-Cherry-Mobile-One.png)

Before i give my official review of this product, let me say that I wasn't really expecting much from the device since my previous experience from Cherry Mobile and and other Android Phones is that batteries do not last very long.  True enough, I have to charge this baby every night so that i will not run out of power in the middle of the day. This problem is especially true when I use the phone to play games and go online.

With that expectation out of the way, I tried out my new toy, the Cherry Mobile Android One. Over all, I was happy, not giddy but happy.

First, it's a Google device. This baby has a lot of features courtesy of Google. On the downside, you have to be online to use them. On the upside, the apps are pretty cool. My favorite is the dictation tool. It cuts my texting time immensely. I also get to enjoy other Google Apps in it without major hitches. The only limitation is the screen size; but hey, it's a friggin' phone, not a tablet or a laptop.

Second, I don't have to keep checking it's screen to find out if a text or any other notifications are up. It has an indicator light that blinks green when I get something -- a text, an email an FB notification, an incoming chat, a calendar alert, etc. The screen remains black but I still know I got something.

Third, it runs on Android Lollipop! Need I say more?

On the downside, here are some things you have to watch out for:

1. Better make sure you download the Google USB driver at:
https://dl-ssl.google.com//android/repository/latest_usb_driver_windows.zip. Other wise, your phone will be a read-only drive.

2. There is no Phone Suite for this model... yet. (I'll update this part if one comes out.)

3. The speaker and vibra alerts have quirks I have yet to figure out. Sometimes I get the notifications by sound and feel, sometimes I don't. Good thing they have the light alert.

4. If you ever remove your SD card from it and you put it back in, all the links from the processes to the files in that card get severed. So, again, make sure you install the driver (see #1) so you don't have to do this.

5. I have yet to figure out how to reconfigure the save settings for the camera and downloads so that they would go to the SD card instead of the internal memory. The internal memory is only 8gb, so I am wary about this. If you know how to do this, please tell me via the comments here.

Would I recommend this? Hm... yes and no. It really depends on how you use a device. I am not (yet) a heavy android user so this works for me for now.  I do miss the palpable keypads of my previous devices though.

Third of a Series: Filipinisms Part 2 - Say What?!

And there are other terms that seriously boggle the mind on how they came about. Just the same, these terms are unique to Filipinos and will confuse foreigners.

(picture from http://www.politicususa.com)

For example, sales personnel would say "It's for free" instead of saying "It's free".  Honestly, where did that "for" come from?

Filipinos on phone conversations sometimes say "Come again?" when they couldn't understand what the person on the other end of the line is saying. Why "come"? It is much clearer to be correctly saying. "pardon me" or "Could you repeat that please?"

In the same breath, one would also wonder why Filipinos say "Hold your line" or "For a while" when asking a caller to wait for a bit. The correct term is "Please hold" or the more polite "Could you wait for a while?"

Many foreigners also get confused when asked where the "CR" or "comfort room" is. The more understandable term to use here is "rest room", but Filipinos have used "comfort room" since time immemorial. I am not sure how this came about. Maybe it's because you get comfort when you use it?  teehee...

In accomplishing forms, one would often hear "fill up the blanks" instead of "fill in the blanks". This is a reflection of the Filipino tendency to mix up prepositions.

Then there is the term "in fairness" instead of saying "to be fair". It is used in discussions when someone or something is being criticized and the speaker wants to plug in a disclaimer or a redeeming quality.  For example, someone wore a trench coat on a hot day, one could say, "The get-up seems too warm but, in fairness, he pulled it off and looked great."

One might say that the meanings to the terms can be traced from pop culture, and is thus a passing phase. Some terms still stuck and their references remained in the past. So now, we use them without really undertsanding what they mean.

Speaking of pop culture and language, one can argue about that relationship in terms of Beki Language -- that ever-evolving colorful street lingo often used by homosexuals... but that's a whole new discussion on its own.

Food Break: The Tortang Talong

This is probably my favorite dish. I like lots of dishes but this one is my go-to viand, but we have our own recipe for it. Let me share to you this recipe we use.

Disclaimer: We don't really measure ingredients at home, so pardon the lack of digits in this recipe:

(photo from marketmanila.com)

Ingredients:
egg plant (shorter ones are easier to manage)
egg (1 egg per eggplant)
flour (1/3 cup per egg plant)
ground pork (1/2 kg would be good for 3-4 eggplants)
pepper
salt
garlic

optional:
carrots, small dices or grated (these will sweeten the mix)
peas
potatoes. small dices (less than 1cm per side)

Procedure:
1. Grill the eggplant until the skin is blackened.
2. Remove the skin. It's thin, so be careful not to peel to the seeds.
3. Set aside the eggplant.
4. In a bowl, mix in all the other ingredients. You shouldn't be able to make balls from the mix. If you can, that means you put in too much flour. To remedy, add egg.
5. Use a wide frying pan and heat some oil. Stay on low heat.
6. Put 2 tablespoons of the meat mix onto the pan and shape it into an flat oval.
7. Quickly add the eggplant by flattening it onto the mix.
8. Add 2 more tablespoons of the egg mix and spread it generously over the meat and eggplant.
9. Increase the flame to a medium setting. Wait for the mix to brown. It takes about a minute or less.
10. Use two spatulas. Put one under the mix and the other on top to secure it. Carefully flip it. Be careful here because the whole thing can break if it's not yet properly cooked on one side.
11. Cook until the second side is brown.

The number of servings depends on the number of eggplants you use.  You have the option to use catsup here. (Personally, I don't use catsup.) Best served with hot rice. Enjoy!

Second of a series: Filipinisms part 1 - Making sense of some terms

One of the biggest difficulties I have noticed among my Filipino students is their tendency to transliterate from Tagalog to English.  Case in point, they would say "Kill the lights" because one would say "Patayin ang ilaw" in Tagalog. Patayin literally means "to kill".

And thus was born this thing called Filipinisms.

Encyclopedia.com defines Filipinsm as "A linguistic usage specific to or typical of the Philippines, such as Open the light Switch on the light, captain-ball basketball team captain, and viand any dish eaten with rice."

Mind you, these terms may be popularly used in the Philippines, but these are terms unique to the Philippines. So, please, try not to use them when talking to foreigners.

Filipinisms don't end with transliterations. The funnier aspect of this phenomenon is when Filipinos try to put Tagalog expressions into English, or using English terms in the Tagalog context. To many, these terms then become their go-to terms when speaking in English.

Some are terms that came about using popular logic (it may not be straight logic but it could make some sense).

In old Tagalog, there were no terms for toothpaste, picture-taking, photocopying and other activities related to new technology. As these innovations were introduced to Filipinos, what most would encounter would the commercial products related to them. Hence, the toothpaste got to be more popularly known as Colgate. picture-taking was Kodak-an and photocopying was Xerox. So it wasn't uncommon to hear of people going to the store and asking for "Colgate na Close-up" when wanting to buy a tube of Close-up toothpaste. So when they try to speak in English, they'd most likely say, "Can I have these papers xeroxed?"

Here are some other commercial terms used as common nouns:
Chicklet - chewing gum
Coke - soft drinks
(feel free to suggest more)

Have you ever wondered what the Tagalog is for "pedicab" (that 3-wheeled contraption that is a bike with a sidecar)? It's traysikad (pronounced as try-see-khud). The term is actually a mash-up of "tricycle" and sikad (to pedal). Since part of its origin is already an English term, many would use the new Tagalog term to refer to it in English and say, "Let's ride the trisikad here."

There are also the classic terms that were created based on real English terms. For example, people do "tuck in" shirts, right? So Filipinos coined tuck out to mean that one has "untucked" the said shirt.

In referring to periods of time, Filipinos like saying next next week instead of "the week after next". The number of "next"'s would reflect the number of weeks hence. So three weeks from now would be next next next week and so on. This is also applicable to months, years, decades, centuries, etc.

When referring to people, there the:
Oppositor - someone who opposes
Senatoriable/Presidentiable - someone who could be a senator/president
Tutee/Advisee - as opposed to tutor or adviser
Sewer - one who sews
(Feel free to add more here too.)

Amused yet?  There are more.  The next one will be about terms whose origins I am not sure of.
